Chapter 21

The stars overhead twinkled aside the full moon as Natalia stepped out her back door carrying the kettle of crawdads for Ju Ju to put on the fire glowing inside the ring in the middle of her back yard. Her father stood alongside the edge of her herb garden sipping a bourbon and chatting with Jamie while Delia arranged the rest of the food on the makeshift table set up along the fence. Bluesy music filled the air and her windchimes sang along with the music.

It was a perfect night. A handful of family and friends, good food and plenty of laughter. Just the way she liked it. Intimate and magickal. Of course, the magick would come later after everyone left when she would celebrate Samhain by doing her spell work within the circle she would cast once she was alone.

Her only disappointment would be that Jamie would be gone. His flight left at seven the following morning, and she felt like once he was gone, something would be missing from her life. It was nonsense, she knew that. They had enjoyed each other for two weeks and that’s all it was to be. She thought about paying him a surprise visit in Ireland before the winter holidays, but it was not to be. Natalia knew people came into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. And sometimes that reason was just to enjoy the time together. That’s what her and Jamie were to be. Time together which would be forever in her memories.

Natalia felt him approach before he put a hand on her back and leaned in to kiss her cheek. “‘Tis a nice party, lass. I can’t think of a better way to spend my last night here.”

She put her head against his shoulder and felt his arm tighten around her waist. “I’m glad you came.”

“I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.” His lips brushed the top of her head. “Perhaps this doesn’t have to be a permanent farewell. It’s just a mere day’s flight across the ocean. Truth is, I’m not sure I can just go home and forget about ye.”

As many times as Natalia had played that scenario over in her mind over the last two weeks, she knew there was no way she could carry on a long-distance relationship with him. It was doomed to fail. And even if this whole return thing which Siobhan’s ghost insisted she participate in was true, going to Ireland was out of the question.

It had been quiet as far as Siobhan was concerned. The ghost had not visited her since before they went for the swamp tour. In fact, even her clairvoyance was all wacky and she’d had to rely on her cards for readings for the last few days. She figured it had to do with Jamie being such a distraction. Pleasant though it was, she was ready to get back to her regular routine. Tonight, after everyone was gone, she would do her Samhain ritual and get back to normal.
